Motorway Services
The first proper Motorway Service station to open was Watford Gap on the M1 in 1959, marking a glorious time for motorists with the new motorways offering a speed limit-free journey across the country. Today, Motorway Services offer everything we need, including room temperature coffee - the epitome of luxury!
In the early years of motorway travel, service stations were seen as destinations, each offering a unique and extravagant experience compared to everywhere else. Proper dining rooms with table service and exquisite food were housed inside elaborate architecture, making each stop a grand affair.
However, in the present day, it's fair to say that the magic has worn off a little, with many of these once-popular buildings falling into decline. No longer seen as the exciting dining locations they once were, many services have experienced closure or have areas that are now closed off. It has become a noble goal to cover all of these areas and document their decline over time.
