MMU Cheshire, Alsager Campus
MMU Cheshire is a significant part of the county's educational history, which began in 1912 with the opening of Crewe College of Education. During the Second World War, the college served as a hospital for injured soldiers. In 1942, it became one of the first institutions in the UK to offer a recognised course for training nursery teachers.
In 1947, another teacher training institution was established in Cheshire, known as Alsager College of Education. This site also contributed to the war effort by accommodating 1,000 women who worked in a nearby munitions factory. In 1974, both colleges merged to form Crewe and Alsager College of Higher Education. Then, in 1992, MMU took over the colleges, becoming the third largest university in England. The faculty was renamed MMU Cheshire in August 2003. MMU continued to manage the Alsager campus until 2012, when it closed and moved all courses to the Crewe campus, which has also since shut down. The Alsager site has since been demolished and replaced with a modern development of houses.
Please excuse the poor quality of these photographs, this location was visited very early in my Urbex journey.
