The Cheshire Train Graveyard

An unassuming quarry in the Cheshire, countryside is home to a notable "train graveyard" featuring twelve abandoned DB Cargo/ EWS Class 60 diesel locomotives. These locomotives, affectionately known as "Tugs" by rail enthusiasts, were constructed between 1989 and 1993. Initially brought to the quarry for potential restoration, they were left to deteriorate over the years. Currently, they remain in a state of disrepair, with visible rust, broken windows, and holes in their roofs. The quarry itself has a history of industrial use, including peat extraction, which is permitted until 2028. In recent years, there have been proposals to redevelop the site for residential purposes. In 2015, outline planning permission was granted for approximately 350 homes, along with an extra-care housing facility and retail units. However, subsequent reserved matters applications faced challenges and were eventually refused or withdrawn. Local residents have expressed concerns about the scale of development and its impact on infrastructure and the environment.

The numbers of the locomotives in this location are 60012, 60032, 60036, 60037, 60048, 60052, 60068, 60077, 60078, 60084, 60089 and 60093.
