Buzz Bingo, Gorton

The bingo hall stands on land that was once part of the historic Belle Vue amusement park, a major leisure complex that operated from the 19th century until its closure and demolition in the late 20th century. After redevelopment, the site became home to a purpose-built bingo venue, reflecting a broader shift toward modern indoor entertainment.

In the mid-1990s, the building was constructed for Riva Bingo, part of First Leisure’s bingo division. Riva was known for developing large, purpose-designed clubs rather than converting older buildings, and this venue appears to have followed that model, likely opening around 1995. This origin helps explain its layout and distinguishes it from earlier generations of bingo halls.

A major transition occurred in 2000 when Gala Bingo acquired Riva’s portfolio of clubs. The venue was subsequently rebranded and operated as a Gala Bingo club for many years. During this period, it functioned as a typical large-scale bingo venue, combining traditional paper games with electronic terminals, alongside bar and social facilities. Gala became one of the dominant forces in the UK bingo industry during this era.

In 2015, Gala’s bingo clubs were sold, and by 2018 they were rebranded under the Buzz Bingo name. The club continued under this branding as part of wider efforts to modernise bingo and appeal to changing audiences.

Like many similar venues, it faced long-term pressures including shifting leisure habits, the impact of the smoking ban, and growing online competition. These challenges were intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to widespread disruption across the bingo sector. The club ultimately closed in the early 2020s and has since remained unused.

Overall, the site’s history reflects the broader trajectory of the UK bingo industry: from 1990s expansion with purpose-built clubs, through consolidation under major operators, to rebranding and eventual decline in the face of changing social and economic conditions. In March 2026 a planning application was submitted to Manchester City Council to demolish the former Bingo club.
